World Soil Day 2018 is for Fight against Soil Pollution

The Agricultural Training Institute is one with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) in celebrating the World Soil Day (WSD) this December 5.

This year’s celebration of WSD aims to raise awareness and call for people to #StopSoilPollution. These days, pollution continues to be a worry and soil is also affected. While the changes that have made to the planet can be seen, some of the impacts are virtually invisible and soil pollution is a good example.

#StopSoilPollution is at the heart of the Global Soil Partnership’s mandate as demonstrated by the Global Symposium on Soil Pollution. They work to ensure that people have safe and nutritious food for an active and healthy life, without endangering essential ecosystems services.

The international day to celebrate soil was recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in 2002. Under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand and within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership, FAO supported the formal establishment of WSD as a global awareness-raising platform. The FAO Conference unanimously endorsed WSD in June 2013 and requested its official adoption at the 68th UN General Assembly. In December 2013, the UN General Assembly responded by designating December 5, 2014 as the first official WSD.
