The Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) based in Tokyo, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture (DA), held a food processing lecture, November 22, for the second part of the Agribusiness Webinar for Overseas Filipino Workers on starting small enterprises.
The DA’s Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) tapped experts, Dr. Violeta Salda and Asst. Professor Lesley Dale Umayat, from the Food Science Research and Innovation Center of Benguet State University (BSU) as resource persons. They demonstrated the process of making strawberry jam, carrot pickles, and sweet potato chips. The 57 Zoom-registered participants and other Facebook Live viewers learned basic cooking principles, techniques, and product packaging the BSU way.
“We encourage our participants here to be innovative and creative in developing their own products and to use online platforms for marketing. There is a great potential for you to earn in food processing,” Umayat said.
Meanwhile, Welfare Officer Amy Crisostomo of POLO-OWWA Tokyo encouraged the participants to apply what they learned from the activity.
“Simulan na po nating gamitin ang lahat ng ating natutunan ngayon. Sa mga nagdaang buwan, ang POLO Tokyo ay nagsagawa ng maraming webinars upang maipaabot namin ang aming serbisyo sa larangan ng Reintegration Preparedness Program through Skills Development at kami ay umaasa na kayo ay aming natulungan upang matutong magsimula ng inyong pangkabuhayan,” Crisostomo said.
[Let us now use everything that we’ve learned today. In the past months, POLO Tokyo conducted several webinars so we can offer our services under the Reintegration Preparedness Program through Skills Development and we hope that we were able to help you learn how to start your own businesses.]
The first part of the webinar held on November 8 discussed the investment opportunities, loan programs, and training prospects of the DA that may be accessed by the OFWs and other interested parties. The webinar was streamed live on the official Facebook pages of POLO-OWWA Tokyo and DA-ATI.
The webinar may be re-watched on the POLO-OWWA Tokyo Facebook page (https://fb.watch/25ASUAxiMb/). The Career Development and Management Division of ATI Central Office managed the conduct of the webinar.
