TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite- 30 members of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) from federation and associations in Cavite province completed 11 hours of online training on urban gardening, dubbed as “Training on Urban Agriculture: Affordable, Available, and Safe Food for Persons with Disabilities.”
The Agricultural Training Institute Region Calabarzon collaborated with the Provincial Social and Welfare Development Office of Cavite and Provincial Persons with Disability Affairs Office to educate the PWDs about urban gardening.

Technical personnel from the Center served as resource speakers who discussed various topics in establishing an urban garden. Sign language interpreters were also provided for persons with hearing and communication disability.

As extension support, the participants will be receiving urban gardening starter kits to encourage them to establish their own home gardens. The starter kit include, seedling trays, vegetable seeds, soil media (garden soil, carbonized rice hull, and vermicompost), and garden tools.

Being the parent of a child with autism, Sarah Cuento, shares she joined the training to increase her knowledge on gardening and apply the information gathered from the online training to her small backyard garden.

Meanwhile, PWD Focal Person, Arlene V. Clemente said that the training was holistic with strong impact to the participants.

The training was held last September 14-18, 2020 in a video conference application, in support to the Plant, Plant, Plant Program or Ahon Lahat, Pagkaing Sapat (ALPAS) Laban sa COVID-19 of the Department of Agriculture.
