NASUGBU, Batangas- With an aim to capacitate the skills and knowledge of Wounded-in-Action soldiers and their dependents on the potential viability of native pig and ItikPinas as an enterprise, a four-day capability on training entitled “Training Course on ItikPinas (IP) and Native Pig Production” was conducted by Agricultural Training institute Region IV-A together with the Department of National Defense through the Wounded Soldiers Agriculture Association (WSAC).
According to DOST-PCAARRD, native animals are considered as important components of most agricultural production system in the rural areas. They augment food supplies, provide high quality protein food, and source of livelihood.
Two of these animals which is common in the Philippines, are the native pig and ItikPinas (IP).
The training delivered lecture and discussion to help the participants to understand production management of ItikPinas and native pig. BAI-NSPRDC Center Chief IV Dr. Rene S. Santiago discussed the breeding and production of ItikPinas. Meanwhile, to showcase the potential by-products and market of native pig, Mr. Ian B. Cabriga of Teofely Nature Farms, presented the management and production of native swine. He also discussed the preparation of natural concoctions such as Fermented Fruit Juice (FFJ) and Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ).
Teofely Nature Farm Executive Chef, Roy B. Resurreccion assisted the participants on the processing of different by-products of native swine such as longanisa and lechon.
During the closing program of the activity, ATI IV-A Center Director Ms. Marites Piamonte-Cosico further extended the agency's support by providing four gilts to the organization, while Teofely Gardens donated one boar.
“Kayo ang mgasundalo na nag-aalay ng buhay para sa bansa. Marapat lamang na bigyan kayo ng ikabubuhay ninyo” she added.
The training was held at Brgy. Biliran, Nasugbu, Batangas last June 3-6, 2019.
