CALATAGAN, Batangas - Corn and sugarcane are two of the most important crops in this municipality, with one-third of farmers, depending on corn and sugarcane as their major source of livelihood. However, due to traditional farming practices on harvesting, farmers are used to burn corn and sugarcane by-products; thus, contributing to the effects of greenhouse gases.

A total of 25 representatives from each farm family beneficiary of Climate-Resilient Agriculture (CRA) attended the "Training Course on Corn and Sugarcane By-Products" on May 14-16, 2019 at Sitio Layon, Barangay Balitoc, Calatagan, Batangas. The activity aimed to enhance the knowledge and technical capability of the participants on proper waste management and utilization of corn and sugarcane into products.
Ms. Rona Escueta of LGU Padre Garcia, Batangas served as the resource speaker teaching the participants on how to produce handicrafts from corn and sugarcane wastes.

ATI Region IV-A Center Director Marites Piamonte-Cosico during the closing program challenged the participants that with the skills gained from the activity, they must continue to enhance their practice to be able to produce quality and marketable handicrafts from their farm wastes.
