In the past years, dry spells or limited rainfall has been observed in the region, which contributed to the decrease of farm productivity of farmers. Their rice yield was reduced as well as with other crops as they fail to plant or integrate other commodities during the dry season. The use of shallow tube wells (STW) as alternative source of water for irrigation could have mitigated this problem, however, underground source of the STWs was not replenished due to limited rainfall. This does not only affect water supply for farming operations but even in the households.

In response to this concern, the ATI Ilocos Region conducted a Training on Well Logging, and Well Construction and Development for Farmers on September 13-17, 2021 at ATI-RTC I Satellite Training Center, City of Batac. This was attended by 21 farmer-beneficiaries from the Tabug Community Learning Site at Brgy. Tabug, City of Batac, Ilocos Norte. Through this training, said group of farmers were equipped with necessary knowledge and skills in determining groundwater profile through a water log which is their basis in constructing and developing a sustainable water source such as deep wells. Further, they learned how to determine levels underground with optimum water to efficiently use deep wells.

Through lectures and practicum conducted in this training program, a deep well was constructed at the Satellite Training Center. An action plan was also prepared to reflect the participants’ future steps in relation to this project, especially in improving their water sources for their farming activities.

The constructed deep well will surely address the problem on water scarcity in the Satellite Training Center, hence will immensely improve its services to its clientele.
