In line with the implementation of the extension component of the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF), the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center 1 (ATI-RTC 1) in coordination with the Bureau of Plant Industry – National Seed Quality Control Services 1 (BPI-NSQCS 1) conducted the Refresher Course for Seed Growers in Region 1 last June 9-11, 2021 at ATI-RTC 1, Tebag East, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan.

The training aimed to increase the adoption of certified inbred seeds and integrated crop management through promotion, distribution, and development of inbred rice seeds. The 21 duly accredited seed growers who were the participants of the said training were able to gain their knowledge and skills in seed production and certification in terms of the policies, guidelines, and seed technologies and the role of women in the rice industry. This is in connection to the Republic Act 9710 mandate, women shall be given opportunity as those with men to be a seed grower.

On the first day, Dr. Benito Andaya, the Regional Chief of BPI-NSQCS I served as the resource speaker wherein he discussed the mechanics, policies, guidelines on seed certification and the varietal selection and characteristics of the NSIC Approved Rice Varieties. On the second day, Ms. Noemi Avenida of BPI about field inspection and roguing, so as seed sampling, sample preparation and tagging. Ms. Leila Dela Pena of BPI on the third day discussed seed testing procedures and standards.

The center, together with its partner agencies will continue to provide a way in aiming excellence with the RCEF Program through extension services amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
