Rosario, La Union- “This training made me realize more that agriculture activities choose no gender. I appreciate that activities like goat production and management can be both perform by men and women.”, Ms. Mary Joyce R. Ramos of Rosario, La Union said during the Skills Training on Goat Production and Management for Rural-based Organizations (RBO) in La Union.

The said training was conducted on May 18-20, 2022 at Brgy. Tabtabungao, Rosario, La Union and participated by 22 officers and members of 4H Clubs, Rural Improvement Clubs, and Farmers Associations from various municipalities in the province.

Highlights of the three-day training include the orientation of the participants about Gender and Development (GAD). Ms. Dolores Dawasen from the Philippine Commission on Women discussed the Magna Carta for Women; concept of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE); and the difference between Gender Equality and Gender Equity.

Meanwhile, among the topics on goat production and management delivered by Dr. Arcely G. Robeniol from the Office of Provincial Veterinarian in Pangasinan were the prospects and economic potentials of goat production in the Philippines. She emphasized that goat raising provides potential livelihood opportunities due to the increasing demand of goat meat or “chevon”. On the other hand, Ms. Christine Joy Rocapor of Rocapor’s Farm shared the ethno-veterinary medicine practices and discussed the importance of record keeping for goat management.

The participants of the training learned the different production technologies and practices which include the housing and management, feeds and feeding, and health management practices (e.g., medication and vaccination).

They also received 10 does as production support from the Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center 1 (ATI-RTC 1). This project was put into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between ATI-RTC 1, as the lead implementer, Rocapor’s Farm School for Practical Agriculture, as collaborating implementer, and the beneficiaries. The MOA stipulates the dispersal and roll over scheme of the project.

ATI strongly supports GAD activities and it is hope that this goat production project will provide opportunities to both men and women, especially in the country side.
