Diseases of Juvenile and Adult Mud Crab Scylla spp. in the Philippines

Mud crab is considered an important source of income for small scale coastal farmers in the country and across Southeast Asia. However, according to reports, aquaculturists were alarmed with the rate of mud crab mortality due to some diseases and cannibalism in the deep ocean (Shelly and Lovatelli, 2011; Quinito and Esterpa, 2008; Quinito et al., 2002; Keenana and Blackshaw, 1999).

Hence, a study was made by Lavilla-Pitogo and dela Pena (2004) to identify various diseases of mud crab; their causative agent; stages affected; and effects and methods of prevention and control, among others. The research results show that most of these diseases can be diagnosed visually.
