Fish Farmer in Abra Shares Prospects in Polyculture

Danilo Trongco at DJ’s Farm

DILIMAN, Quezon City—Polyculture can help local fish producers maximize the utilization of their ponds and cater to the expanding consumer demand, according to a practitioner in Lagangilang, Abra.

Danilo Trongco, owner of DJ’s Farm in Brgy. Nagtupacan, said in a radio interview that polyculture fish production, or the simultaneous culture of two or more non-competing fish species, is more productive and profitable compared with monoculture.

Farmers, Fishers Take Spotlight as Food Security Frontliners

The Department of Agriculture (DA) kicked off the yearly Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month celebration and launch of the Plant, Plant, Plant program by recognizing outstanding farmers and fisherfolk, ceremonial planting of mango and aromatic dwarf coconut, and inspection of aquaponics prototypes, on May 26, 2020 at the DA Central Office, Quezon City.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar awarded certificates to seven outstanding farmers and fisherfolk during the event, with the theme, “Pagpupugay sa Magsasaka at Mangingisda Natin, Tungo sa Sapat na Pagkain.”

Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month Highlights Various Agri Industries

The Agricultural Training Institute is one with the entire Department of Agriculture (DA) family in the celebration of the Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month. With the theme, “Magsasaka’t Mangingisdang Pilipino, Saludo ang Buong Bansa sa Sipag, Tibay, at Lakas Ninyo,” the Institute recognizes the invaluable contributions of our farmers and fishers in nation-building.

To help market the products of our farmers and fisherfolk in the metro, the DA launched a month-long AgriTiangge. Likewise, the event aims to bring affordable and fresh food closer to consumers.
