Nat’l S&T Week Highlights Contributions to SDGs

To highlight the significant contributions of science and technology in national development, the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) is celebrated every third week of July through Proclamation No. 169 of 1993.

This year's theme, "Science for the People: Enabling Technologies for Sustainable Development," aims to strengthen the latest innovations in technologies, research, and products that help achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Experts Share Key to Vegetable Farming Success

DILIMAN, Quezon City—During the latest free seminar of the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), Dr. Isagani Catedral of Livegreen International Incorporated underscored the importance of good field planning in achieving a successful vegetable farming venture.

"You should start right by having a master plan–a field lay-out–to avoid losses resulting from poor field planning," he said. He then discussed how a planting program helps provide continuous supply of vegetables to the target market, which should also be based on household and market preference.

DA Trainers Learn IRM to Help Mango Farmers

DAVAO CITY—With the damages that local mango farmers continue to face due to cecid fly infestation, insecticide resistance management (IRM) strategies are put in place to combat different pest-related issues.

The IRM, however, is a complex system of management technology for mango farmers. To assist them, a training of trainers (TOT) for IRM of Cecid Fly in Mango was conducted.

VIGAN, Ilocos Sur—Aimed at making agriculture more appealing to today’s youth, success stories and product innovations of young farmers all over the country were put on spotlight during the 67th Farm Youth (4-H) National Convention.

John Lord Auman, Michael Elechicon, and John Andrew Nero were some of the 4-H Club members who shared insights and lessons learned from their experiences as country representatives to international programs for farm youth in Australia, South Korea, and Japan, respectively.

DILIMAN, Quezon City—Agriculture enthusiasts once again flocked the Agricultural Training Institute’s (ATI) free seminar where technologies on nursery management and plant propagation were discussed.

Farming experts Maiko Gil Hiwatig and Maximo Din from MoCa Family Farm RLearning Center, Inc. (MFFRLC) in Padre Garcia, Batangas were invited to share effective farming practices for propagation and the nursery.

Rice Farming Innovations Celebrated

PASAY CITY—Top rice-producing provinces, cities, and municipalities, as well as outstanding farmers’ associations, in 2018 were recognized during the latest Rice Achievers Awards.

Various local government units, irrigators’ associations, and small water irrigation systems associations received trophies and cash prizes for their exemplary contributions in rice farming.

Senator Cynthia Villar, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, congratulated these achievers as she gave the keynote message during the awarding ceremony.
