DA to Promote Rice Varieties Preferred by Consumers

After attaining increased palay production during the 2019-2020 dry season and the current main season, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is now aiming to promote rice varieties preferred by consumers.

“We need to adapt to the changes brought about by the rice tariffication law, one of which is consumers’ preference for quality rice. This is now an integral part of the overall transformation of the country’s rice industry,” said Agriculture Secretary William Dar.

Aside from being a lucrative source of income to farmers, beekeeping is now becoming a promising job for people who want to have a stable income.

Other countries have enlisted beekeeping as one of the most in-demand jobs today. Countries like Canada and Australia offer as high as $4,000 or close to P155,000 salary a month for workers in this industry. Filipinos are already part of the beekeeping industry and employment agencies have been constantly sending workers abroad since 2006.

Agriculture Secretary William D. Dar was chosen as the “Lifetime Contributor” awardee for the public sector by the board of judges of Asia CEO Awards 2020, which recognizes leaders for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the country as a whole.

Richard Mills, chair of the award-giving body, said Secretary Dar is cited for his leadership and unwavering efforts to transform Philippine agriculture into a dynamic high-growth sector.

DA Rolls Out Php250-M Agribusiness Grants for Farmer Cooperatives

Committed to improve the lives of Farmer/fisherfolk Cooperatives and Associations or FCAs, the Department of Agriculture developed a new program to assist cooperatives through a financial grant.

The program entitled Enhanced Kadiwa Financial Grant aims to give cooperatives additional capital to be able to purchase supplies and equipment that will help them sell their produce directly to consumers. This may include vegetables crates, packing equipment, delivery truck and revolving fund as assemblers or consolidators of fresh produce.
