BAGUIO CITY - The implementation of the Luzon-wide Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) due to the COVID-19 pandemic is not all bad news.

The bad things of the on-going crisis are one side of the coin. The crisis also brings on many good things beaming with hope at the end of the tunnel.

For instance, the current health crisis created a need for local farmers to sell highland produce to needful communities in Metro Manila and other urban areas.

DA’s “Plant, Plant, Plant Program” to benefit All Farmers, Fishers, Consumers Nationwide

The Department of Agriculture (DA) will implement nationwide the Duterte administration’s “Plant, Plant, Plant Program” or “Ahon Lahat, Pagkaing Sapat (ALPAS) Laban sa Covid-19” program to benefit farmers, fishers and consumers.

“The ‘Plant, Plant, Plant Program’ will be implemented not only in Luzon, where the Enhanced Community Quarantine is being enforced, but also in Visayas and Mindanao,” said Agriculture Secretary William Dar.

KADIWA Offers Farmers’ Produce During Quarantine Period

Farmers' produce will be on sale in various points in Metro Manila and other parts of the country as the Department of Agriculture (DA) rolls out KADIWA ni Ani at Kita.

KADIWA, which stands for “Katuwang sa Diwa at Gawa para sa Masaganang Ani at Mataas na Kita”, is a marketing strategy of the Department which directly connects food producers to consumers, thereby lessening the cost of the products up to 20 percent than those at the market.

Door-to-door delivery of vegetables, fruits as agri dept taps e-commerce

MANILA -- The Department of Agriculture partnered with an online shopping platform to deliver produce to Metro Manila homes during the COVID-19 lockdown, DZMM reported Monday.

Consumers can shop on the website (https://homegrown-organics.myshopify.com) and have fruits and vegetables delivered to their doorstep. Nearby areas such as Antipolo are also covered, according to the report.

DA Taps Private Sector, Employs Tech Solution to Expand Kadiwa

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is fine-tuning its “Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita,” a flagship agri-fishery marketing program, to serve more consumers in urban areas and improve market linkages between them and farmer-producers amid the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Luzon.

Agriculture Secretary William D. Dar said that the DA under its Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita program will launch a multi-platform system to include “Kadiwa Express” and “Kadiwa Online.”

Farmers’ Information and Technology Services (FITS) Centers and Magsasaka Siyentistas (MS) nationwide are dedicating their resources to help their respective communities despite limitations in mobility this quarantine period.

Agriculture offices in different local government units (LGUs) that operate FITS Centers and partner farmers who serve as MS have opted to continue providing agricultural services amid the ongoing community quarantine measures. This is to help address the needs not only of farming and fishing communities but also of other households in their locality.

To ensure food availability and sustain production amidst the threat of COVID-19, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is intensifying the promotion of urban agriculture through the distribution of free vegetable seeds and planting materials nationwide.

“We need to explore all strategies to ensure that food productivity, availability and sufficiency is attained, particularly in this challenging time,” said Agriculture Secretary William Dar, who has been advocating the importance of urban agriculture even before the Covid-19 episode in the country.
