Corn focal persons learn pests and diseases management

Training participants engage in their field activities such as identification of pests and diseases in corn as well as integrated pest and disease management.

TRENTO, Agusan del Sur – Seeing the importance of corn and cassava industries in the region, the Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center (ATI-RTC) 13 capacitated Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) on the identification and management of pests and diseases of corn and cassava. This is in collaboration with the Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC).

Said training aimed at enhancing the participants’ knowledge and skills in identifying and managing common insect pests and diseases in corn and cassava.

Through a 3-day training, participants gained knowledge on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) concepts and principles. They have also identified the beneficial and harmful organisms present in corn and cassava. Lecturers from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) discussed Risk Transfer Mechanism and the life cycle of these pests as well as detection of early symptoms of diseases.

The participants experienced actual pests and diseases identification as well as damage assessment of cassava and corn during their field visit.

There were thirty (30) participants from different municipalities in Region 13 attended in the Specialized Training Course on Corn/Cassava Pests and Diseases Management which was held on April 15-17, 2019 at RCPC, Trento, Agusan del Sur.
