PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur – Twenty-six agricultural extension workers (AEWs) and farmer-leaders in Caraga region attended the Training on Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) for Swine Production from July 30 - August 1, 2018 at the Hygeia IntegraMeds Center this province. The said activity was in collaboration with the Provincial Veterinary Office. It was composed of several lectures given by experts in the field of swine production as well as hands-on activities in feed formulation and feed mixing. Moreover, participants were also trained how to calculate feed ration namely Pearsons Square and Trial and Error method.

The purpose of the training was to enhance the knowledge and skills of AEWs and farmers on GAHP Swine Production. Specifically, it was expected that the participants will be able to explain the Code of Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP); describe and discuss the different animal housing and facilities; discuss Feed Production; formulate feeds using simple basic feed formulation; discuss the different farm management; discuss animal health management; familiarize farm record keeping; review and evaluate of Practices; and formulate an Action Plan.

Quiao, AEW of Bayugan City. (The training was a great help, especially for farmers since there is an additional technology which can be applied and shared to others who have inadequate knowledge. What I appreciated in the training was the actual demonstration because we learned on how to prepare the feed and also on GAHP. This is helpful for us especially that we want to make sure that our products are at the right price, have a big market and are safe for everyone.)
