ATI, PVO equip farmer leaders to function 3 in 1

Dr. Easter Nono of the PVO-Agusan del Sur demonstrated the proper administration of vitamin ADE during the field exposure and hands-on exercises at the Goat Multiplier Farm in Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.

PATIN-AY, Prosperidad – Enhancing the access to veterinary services of the locals in far-flung areas, the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center 13 and the Provincial Veterinary Office conducted the Training on Animal Health Care and Management.

Held at the Hygeia IntegraMeds Center last July 28-30, 2021, the training aimed to capacitate the existing Barangay Agricultural Workers (BAW) into becoming a Barangay Biosecurity Officers (BBO) and at the same time a Barangay Animal Health Worker (BAHW) rolled into one.

During the opening ceremony, Development Management Officer I/Project Officer Florita G. Lozada mentioned that the BAHWs will augment the limited number of Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) implementing various animal health programs. She added that they will also help in the monitoring and surveillance of the African Swine Fever (ASF) of the province.

The pool of trainers from the Provincial Veterinary Office included Veterinarian IV Dr. Konielou M. Berdin, Livestock Inspector II Minda B. Manliquez, and Dr. Easter Nono. They worked together to ensure that the participants not only understood and identified the basic animal health care practices. More importantly, they were able to perform these veterinary practices that are necessary in their respective barangays. Among these are the following: deworming, proper restraining of animals, administration of vitamins, blood sample collection, and hoof trimming. The hands-on exercises were conducted at the Goat Multiplier Farm in Patin-ay.

Meanwhile, Insurance Underwriter Cristal Peñero of the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) discussed the guidelines in the implementation of swine industry insurance program.

A total of 18 individuals completed the training course.
