Rookie photographers capture color, life in public market via mobile phone

This photo by Fritzieh Trujillo of the Provincial Agriculture Office of Surigao del Sur was one of the commended outputs during the Training on Photography and Image Editing. Following the rule of thirds and diagonal line techniques with his mobile phone, he was able to capture the hard life of this old vendor at Taboan Public Market in Butuan City.

BRGY. PORT POYOHON, Butuan City - It was hot, crowded, busy and smelly at Taboan Public Market when a group of photographers took photos of the colorful albeit hard life of vendors via mobile phones. The visit was part of the activities of the Training on Photography and Image Editing sponsored by the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) from February 17-20, 2020.

Erwin Mascariñas, a multi-awarded photojournalist and Inquirer correspondent, acted as the lone resource person. He taught the trainees on proper lighting, timing, framing and composition techniques such as the rule of thirds, symmetry, juxtaposition, leading lines, diagonals, shapes and patterns. Mascariñas also taught them techniques on how to maximize the camera features of their mobile device. The trainees realized there are several phone settings that improve brightness, focus, texture and tones of the subject.

After an hour of taking candid and action shots, the trainees headed back to the training venue, which was the Almont Inland Resort, for critiquing and inputting of the speaker. Overall, Mascariñas expressed his delight because all outputs submitted were an improvement from their earlier shots. Some photos were also commended because the quality was even better than the outputs of the more sophisticated Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras.
