Attaining food security through community gardens

Pechays are among the easy-to-grow vegetables planted in the backyard because they are quick growers. Pechay leaves are ready for harvest in as little as one month and it requires little space.

Capitan Bayong, IMPASUGONG, BUKIDNON---For the residents of Barangay Capitan Bayong in Impasugong, Bukidnon, solidarity and a little friendly competition binds them to be food secure. This and rows and rows of planted gardens and well-utilized backyard space is what would be the scenario as each household aspire to win and claim the top prize of the “Home Quarantine, Home Gardening Contest”.

Along with outstanding agricultural extensionist Dayana Padilla and the initiative of the LGU and the Municipal Agriculture Office, the said contest was a timely mitigating measure in the effects brought about by the covid-19 pandemic and to also make each household food sufficient.

Later, nag-distribute dayon mi house to house ug vegetable seeds tapos gi-contest na dayon for Best Home Garden. The seeds distributed were from LGU Impasugong through Mayor Anthony A. Uy and DA-RFO X. The contest was initiated by our Vice Mayor Maria Norly T. Pepito with inclusive dates from April 2-May 22. She was responsible for the prizes of the contest winners along with other stakeholders. Tanang balay sa Capitan Bayong apil sa contest that’s why it took us one week to do the evaluation since we have to visit every household in each zone. There were about 285 households who established their gardens and 74 of them got their respective awards and prizes.”, Ms. Padilla shared.

The house to house awarding transpired on May 22 with their vice mayor and barangay officials headed by Acting Punong Barangay Dawn M. Roque along with BAFC Chairman and volunteers.

Anchored via the Plant Plant Plant Program of the Department of Agriculture, it encourages households to plant vegetables in urban and rural community areas. If a group of neighbors join together to organize, build, and manage a community garden, they bring an impressive array of benefits to their community and to each household.
