Learning the Basics of Urban Vegetable Gardening and Vermicomposting

Cagayan de Oro city, Misamis Oriental---In response to the commitment of the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) to Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piῆol to conduct training for the beneficiaries of the vermicomposting facility last March 2019, a 3-day Training on Vegetable Gardening and Vermicomposting was mounted on July 3-5, 2019 at Harborlights Hotel.

Lectures on Urban Gardening were delivered to the participants coming from the six barangays of the second district to help them understand the importance of growing their own food and waste management through vermicomposting. The participants were able to visit New Square Foot Organic Urban Gardening owned and managed by retired Colonel Honorio Cervantes. Cervantes Farm is one of the Learning Site (LS) partners of ATI-RTC X with Mr. Cervantes as one of its regular Resource Speakers when conducting trainings. Participants were also able tour around the area and do a hands-on activity on soil media preparation and concoction making.

One of the highlights on the last day of the training was a field visit in Barangay Bugo, one of the beneficiary barangays of the rotary composting facility for an actual demonstration and operation of the facility as spearheaded by Engr. Danilo Adriatico from BSWM. The 3-day training was in partnership with ATI-RTC X, DA-RFO 10 and City Agriculture Office (CA) of Cagayan de Oro City. (with reports from Moisa Niña D.
