Just last year, Secretary Emmanuel F. Pińol has directed the Department of Agriculture (DA) that hybrid rice seeds must be planted in 1 million hectares of irrigated lands in its attempt to achieve rice self-sufficiency by the year 2019.
Technology innovations have played an important role in the development of the rice sector in the Philippines. Research and Developments continued to generate modern technologies in rice and make them available to farmers. The adoption of these technologies has provided opportunities for rice farming household to improve their incomes and food security. As reported, one of the contributors to gains in rice yields in the Philippines has been the adoption of high quality seeds, especially CSs. Better seeds coupled with some technologies will hope to increase yield and uplift the conditions of our farmers.
