New Vets and Livestock Technicians Train on Animal Health Care and Management

MALAYBALAY CITY, BUKIDNON – To improve access to veterinary services in the region, the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center X, in coordination with Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RADDL) of the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 10 (DA – RFO 10), recently conducted the training on Animal Health Care and Management.

Participated by 42 newly hired and appointed livestock technicians from Camiguin, Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental, and Misamis Occidental, the training was conducted at Northern Mindanao Agricultural Crops and Livestock Research Complex (NMACLRC), Dalwangan, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon on February 26 – 28, 2019. The training aims to equip the participants the basic knowledge and skills to perform basic animal health care practices and methods.

Topics included to the training were the Basic Health Care Services, History Taking and Disease Investigation, and Ethno-Veterinary Medicine, among others. Resource Persons to these topics were Dr. Rhea Villa Chui. Dr. Viralou Tuquib, Dr. Oryza Baylo, Dr. Omar Cahanap, all from RADDL, and Mr. Arth David Sol Ortega from Central Mindanao University.

Highlighted in the training were the various hands-on activities of the participants which includes semen collection on native pig, carabao and goat, horse breeding, deworming, proper drug administration, dehorning and disbudding, and proper restraining of horses, cattle, goats and carabaos.

Ms. Justine Janelle Sambaan, a livestock coordinator from Talakag, Bukidnon, thanked ATI for the training. “Actually, there were three of us who want to attend this training and I was the one who was sent by the Office. I really enjoyed the training because it is not just purely lecture and discussion. The hands-on and practicum are more important as it is the application of what we have learned in this training. Furthermore, the tips and advices given by our resource persons will be taken well and I thank them for sharing it to us,” she said.

The Training on Animal Health Care and Management is just the 1st Phase. The 2nd Phase of the training which is the Training on Livestock Disease Diagnosis, Outbreak Investigation, Management and Monitoring will be conducted on March 18 – 22, 2019 in the same venue.
