Itik Pinas Production (Episode 17 – August 14, 2020)

Rice-duck farmer James P. Longcob of JPL Farm in Lala, Lanao del Norte is the resource person for this episode. His JPL Farm is also a Learning Site for Agriculture (LSA) of ATI. Mr. Longcob’s specialization and focus on rice-duck farming made him a recipient of the Regional Achievers Award given by the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office X (DA-RFO X). In this episode, Mr. Longcob will share proper care and production guide of Itik Pinas ducks which is a potential income earner for poultry farmers in the country.

Dubbed as a genetically superior breeder duck, Itik Pinas was developed in a project conducted by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) and the National Swine and Poultry Research and Development Center of the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI-NSPRDC). Itik Pinas was a product of continuous selection and breeding of the traditional Pateros duck. The said duck breed aims to address the low and inconsistent egg production performance and product quality of the “mongrel” ducks as an effect of long term indiscriminate breeding practices of the duck industry.

Compared with traditional ducks, Itik Pinas produces more eggs of up to 55 pieces per duck per year over that of the traditional mongrel ducks. Itik Pinas eggs is also consistent in terms of egg weight with at least 80% of egg produced weigh 65 grams or more.

With Mr. Longcob as the resource person, this episode on Itik Pinas Production hopes to bring development and promotion in building enterprises among rural areas.
