Travelogue for Would-be farmers

It is not easy to convince a non-farmer to go into farming. This is mostly because of the common perception that there is no money in farming, especially small scale. There is only money for corporate farming or if not, the “haciendas”.

This is the main motivation for ATI Region 10 to come up with a video production, Cultivating Dreams. It is a travelogue featuring small but productive farms in Northern Mindanao.

The Journey will be through the eyes of Gift, an academician and businessman who wants to go back to his roots and make his parent’s farmland productive. However, he has no background in farming and is undecided on what commodities to plant or livestock to grow.

The first leg of the tour started after he arrived at the Laguindingan Airport from a business trip. Part one of the video will showcase the Buhian Diversified Farm, a coco-based diversified farm and San Roque Farm, a livestock-based farm. Both farms are strategically located as it is situated a few minutes away from the airport. The farms are in Initao and Naawan, Misamis Oriental respectively. The group then proceeded to Iligan City to visit Margeuries House of Goodies, an agri-based processor; Balay Sa Hardin, a diversified farm known for its free-range chicken and yummy dishes; Venida Farm, with its famous healthy processed products such as cranberry and miracle fruit juices. The grouped then capped the day at Queensland, a GAP-Certified herb and spices based farm in Bacolod, Lanao del Norte.

The following day, the group proceeded to Lala, Lanao del Norte where six Learning sites were situated, JPL Farm, Jika Farm, iFarm, S&N Farm, Ranchers Bay and Country Farm. All these farms are rice-based diversified farms except for Ranchers Bay which produces yummy ice cream sticks made from fresh farm produce.

All farms are diversified with majority geared towards the production of safe and healthy food. The farms have numerous farm enterprises and are engaged in value adding. The most common denominator for all are accredited Learning Sites of the Agricultural Training Institute and as such are open to share their farm technologies and practices to interested visitors.
