Celebrating May as Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month

Lady farmers and their farm produce.

Farmers play a vital role in keeping the country well-fed. Here, fresh farm produce such as ampalaya, eggplant, sayote, kalabasa, and snap beans are among the staple vegetables most housewives and home cooks buy for their meal. DA-RFO X Compound, Cagayan de Oro City---The Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center X (ATI-RTC X) is one with the entire Department of Agriculture (DA) family in the celebration of the Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month.

OIC-Center Director Maria Lydia A. Echavez and PASS Chief Anita L. Molijon paid a courtesy visit yesterday to Regional Executive Director (RED) Carlene C. Collado and Farmer-Director / RAFC Chair Edgardo Layug.

The celebration was formally opened with a mass in honor of St. Isidore, the patron saint of farmers and then proceeded with the opening of DA Tiangge where farm products such as vegetables, rice, poultry products, fruits, and processed goods were on sale. The tiangge was mounted to help market the products of Misamis Oriental farmers and fisherfolk in Metro CdO and to bring affordable and fresh food closer to urban consumers.

A meeting with RED Collado and Director Layug later transpired discussing among others how ATI-RTC X in collaboration with DA-RFO X can expand the Learning Sites (LS) in other municipalities, specially the rice producing in the region.

The DA, together with its bureaus and attached agencies, recognizes the significant contributions of our farmers, fishers, and extension workers in nation-building with the theme, “Magsasaka’t Mangingisdang Pilipino, Saludo ang Buong Bansa sa Sipag, Tibay, at Lakas Ninyo,” (With reports from OIC-Center Director Maria Lydia A. Echavez)
