KALIBO, Aklan – In Support to the Plant, Plant Plant program of the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center VI distributed various starter kits to selected municipalities in the Province of Aklan on May 22, 2020.

The “Starter Kit 1” is composed of different vegetable seeds that include talong, ampalaya, pechay, sitao, hot pepper, upland kangkong and tomato were distributed to the municipalities of Kalibo, Malinao, Numancia, Balete, Malay and Altavas. Those municipalities had identified 30 farmer-participants who completed the requirements of the program “Training on Agri-crops production/Urban Gardening amidst Covid-19” aired over GMA – DYRU Kalibo, Aklan from April 14 – 30, 2020.

Meanwhile, “starter kit 2” is composed of full-grown vegetables seedlings that include ampalaya, okra, sitao, upland kangkong, hot pepper, were distributed to municipalities who have committed to established a community garden. The said community garden will then serve as seed bank facility of the community that provide vegetable seedlings and other planting materials for the interested individual in the locality.

For the municipality of Kalibo, Hon. Emerson Lachica, Municipal Mayor, personally received the vegetable seedlings during the turn-over held on May 22 at the Municipal Agriculture Office’s Lobby. He thanked ATI Region 6 thru Dr. Eden Bautista and expressed his support to the program. Other municipalities who have signified to establish community garden include Numancia, Malinao, and Balete.

Vegetable seedlings distributed were grown at “Atong Ugsaran”, a demonstration area of ATI Western Visayas which showcases various technologies on Urban Agriculture such as container and square foot gardening.
