Seeing the need to promote agriculture to the new generation, the Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center XI (ATI- RTC XI) conducted series of vegetable gardening trainings with after-training support to some elementary schools in the region to aid them in the establishment of their “Gulayan sa Paaralan”.
The trainings which were conducted last year aimed to teach the student how to grow their own food using the containerized gardening technology. It is also a means to instill to them the values and appreciation of agriculture, as well as promote food security inside the school and the community.
Almost a year after the conduct of trainings, proof its success can be attested in the recipient schools thriving and producing vegetable gardens.
Tagurot Elementary School principal, Ms. Iryn P. Avila, underscored that the partnership with ATI provided holistic benefits to the school and to the students. According to her, the project opened opportunities for the students to appreciate the beauty of farming as well as generate supplementary income to fund school activities.
“Some of the vegetable produce were cooked during the feeding programs while some were sold to the community. As of record, we already earned Php 29,000 for the last three croppings.” Avila said.
Likewise, Center Director Dante G. Esguerra, commended Avila for the successful implementation of the program during one of his visit to the school.
Other school recipients of the training were Datu Abdul Elementary School in Panabo City, Davao del Norte, Southern Davao Elementary School in Panabo City, Davao del Norte, Camansi National High School in Montevista, Compostela Valley, Manuel b. Guinez Sr. National High School in Banaybanay, Davao Oriental, Sta. Cruz Central Elementary School in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, and Lawa National High School in Don Marcelino, Davao Oriental.
