Training on Spices for Farmers at Saguiaran
SAGUIARAN, Lanao del Sur -- A 3-day Training on Spices for Farmers was conducted in the municipality of Saguiaran, Lanao del Sur on August 30, 2012- September 01, 2012. Seventy-five (75) participants attended the activity. The first day of activity started with Opening Program graced by PAO, Pangalian A. Balindong, Jr. In his message he emphasized the significance of vegetables and spices in the daily lives of the Maranaos. He noted one of the major problems among farmers in Lanao Sur is mal-nutrition which was identified caused by insufficient intakes of vegetables among Maranao families. He challenged the participants mostly mothers to engage more in vegetable productions so that the Maranaos will not be dependent on the vegetables and spices coming daily from Iligan City and other outside sources. He lamented the loss of economic gains among Maranaos in not producing their own vegetables. In fact he said Lanao Sur has fertile soils suited fully for any types of crops and could be a potential producer of vegetables. Ms. Marilou Sopocado, Provincial Agri-Business Coordinator, DAF-ARMM made the first lecture in the afternoon session and discussed the marketing aspect of vegetables and spices. She discussed the different linkages to organizations interested in vegetables and how to access with them for possible market tie-up. She noted that every type of crops grown in Lanao del sur has good prospect of market assurance and value. Mr. Abdulsalam Batao, Agricultural Scientist under the Office of the Provincial Governor, Lanao del Sur delved on such topics as bulb onion, white scallion, black & sweet pepper, spring onion, oregano and other spices and vegetables until the 3rd day which was devoted to hands-on activity in the field.  The resource speakers made emphasis on the use and importance of organic agriculture as basis for producing agricultural crops.   The participatory approach was employed during the lectures. Lively discussions and interactions among and between farmers were observed during the sessions and sharing mostly their experiences in the field. In the course of the Q&A many important things were clarified where before were not clearly understood to the farmers. Also majority of the participants were women. In the Closing Program the same positive impressions were vouched by two of the farmers who expressed their gratitude to all those who made possible the realization of the training especially ATI-RTC 9. The MAO also extended his thanks to the participants who attended the 3-day activity especially ATI-RTC 9 in spearheading this program.   The activity ended with a prayer led by one of the participants.   >> more pictures @ facebook
