RTC8 joins Farmers and Fisherfolk’s Month Celebration

Agricultural Training Institute- Regional Training Center 8, represented by Dr. Vilma M. Patindol, along with other attached agencies and bureaus of the Department of Agriculture in Region 8 joined in celebrating Proclamation No. 33, dated May 1989 declaring the month of May as the Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month.
 
This year’s theme is: “Sa ASEAN Economic Community Integration, magsasaka at mangingisda, kasama sa pag-unlad ng ating bansa”. Dr. Andrew Rodolfo T. Orais, DA-RFO 8 Assistant Regional Director for Operations, said: “In this particular month long celebration, we specifically intended to recognize and give honor to the exemplary contribution of the agriculture workers.” The celebration will identify the farmer-achievers, such as Gawad Saka Awardee, Rice Achiever’s Awardee, and the Awarding of Entrepreneurs. Further, there are a series of activities all over the region that includes: trainings, sensory evaluation, agri-trade fairs, exhibits, capability building and technology forum.
 
Consequently, DA-RFO 8 OIC Director U-Nichols Manalo announced that DA-RFO 8 designated the Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Council (RAFC) chairperson, Mr. Esteban Conchas as the Farmer-Director for the month of May. OIC Director Manalo explained that the farmer director will be acting on some of the responsibilities of the Regional Executive Director. For one month, he can represent the Regional Executive Director in various activities and conduct monitoring and evaluation activities of DA projects all over the region. The RAFC chairpersons are designated as farmer-directors for them to experience  dealing with the different sectors.
 
The opening program commenced with a motorcade around major roads of Tacloban City and a thanksgiving mass immediately after. Regional Management Council (RMC) members were also present in the afternoon activity which highlighted the programs of the DA-attached agencies in the region.
 
Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month Celebration will culminate on May 30, 2017 in Tacloban City.
