Hybrid rice reorientation for Almeria rice farmers

Technical briefings on hybrid rice production continues  in Almeria, Leyte. Fifty-two (52) rice farmers attended the activity  held on March 7, 2017 and learned about the recommended techniques in growing hybrid rice, and explain the advantages of hybrid rice vs. inbred including its cost and return analysis.
Hybrid rice farmer, Mr. Luisito Amador expressed his gratitude to the coordinators of the technical briefing. “I already planted hybrid rice through the informal introduction from the Municipal Agricultural Technician. I am proud to say that I earned more from planting hybrid rice despite the high cost of seeds which is P1,200/pack of three (3) kilos from the private dealer. I learned many things from the speaker today which I am going to apply on my rice farm”, he said.

Similarly, the open-forum session served as an avenue of sharing for the farmer-participants in growing hybrid rice with both their positive and negative experiences. They raised questions, such as the high price of hybrid seeds, fertilizers, and other chemicals which most of them do not have enough capital for investment.

However, the activity left farmers with keen interest to produce hybrid rice and apply their learnings from the technical briefing. Farmers’ association treasurer, Ms. Ana P. Felecia said, “I gained more knowledge with very limited time during the activity such as recommended process of seed soaking, incubation, seedbed preparation, transplanting and replanting. Thank you to DA and ATI.”
Batch 3 of the Technical briefing on Hybrid Rice production is scheduled on March 14, 2017 in Calbayog, Samar.(With reports from Ma. Helen P. Seco)
