ATI 8 orients FITS staff on e-Extension

Twenty-eight Farmers Information and Technology Services (FITS) managers and staff from 13 FITS centers in the region participated the orientation activity on the e-Extension program of the Agricultural Training Institute on July 19-20, 2011 at VSU, Visca, Baybay, Leyte.

Agripinoy framework introduced

The VSU-based ATI 8 oriented stakeholders on the AgriPinoy framework for common and full understanding of its concept, principles and mechanics.

Forty-five provincial agriculturists and commodity program coordinators from the six provinces of Region VIII attended the regional orientation on February 14-18, 2011 at ATI-RTC 8, VSU, Baybay, Leyte.

FSTP TOT First Batch Conducted

The Farmer-Scientists RDE Training Program (FSTP) has been piloted in various upland barangays in the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, Negros Oriental, Compostela Valley and Mindoro Occidental. It has clearly demonstrated that technical empowerment of poor farmers can improve their quality of life. The trained farmer-scientists have shown great improvements in corn production utilizing improved technologies .

FSTP RTWG Planning Conference Held

On February 27, 2008, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued EO 710 on the adoption as a national program of the Corn-based Farmer Scientists Research, Development and Extension Training Program or FSTP.

The FSTP is an extension program that integrates agricultural research and development that seeks to help poor corn farmers grow multiple crops and livestock in their farms for increased income.

Prior to EO 710, the FSTP was successfully implemented in other parts of the country. Now, it can be expanded in some parts in Eastern Visayas.

Rural development is a colossal challenge that demands total commitment from each one in the rural development organization.  No one in the organization, whether he is the head or the tail, the supervisor or subordinate, can achieve the objectives of the organization all by his/her lonesome.  Each needs the cooperation of the others.  All need to work as a team.

Regional FCC Knowledgebase Creation Workshop Held

TACLOBAN CITY -- In January 2009, the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) had a soft launching of the Department of Agriculture’s Farmers’ Contact Center paving way to the establishment of the Text Support Center for Agriculture and Fisheries. In collaboration with other partner agencies and stakeholders, this new service caters to all queries related to the e-Extension Program for Agriculture and Fisheries. This will soon be expanded to include voice (call) messages.

Updating Sessions for the PalayCheck Farmers' Field School

The PalayCheck System is one good technique at ensuring that all technologies are being followed by farmers at the various stages of rice production.  Experiences have proven that farmers who completely followed the System got better yield than those who did not. 

The System had been tried in past cropping seasons.  While it helped, there is still so much room from growth, especially if and when the System are thoroughly followed.

Agriculture and Fisheries Extension Network (AFEN) Regional Consultation

Changes in the global economy offer so much challenges and opportunities to reach out and serve rural communities through extension.  The increasing demand, for example, for biofuel crops calls for new direction and strategies to empower farmers for extension service providers.  Together with this come the dangers of economic and ecological displacement of resource poor farmers who are not equipped to face the changes.

ATI Cultivates Team Ideals On Nature-conservation (ACTION) for Restorative Agriculture

Machines need to cool and stop spinning. Batteries need recharging. Carabaos need to rest and wallow. Development managers need to take time out and take stock of themselves ad their work.

Year in and year out, the staff of Visca-based Agricultural Training Institute have been moving in and out to enlighten, energize, encourage and empower rural communities in Eastern Visayas.
