ATI 8 conducts TOT on seed banking

Biliran, Biliran -- Twenty-nine farmers and agricultural extension workers from the seven municipalities of Biliran province attended the trainers training on community seed banking both for upland and lowland rice conducted by the ATI-RTC 8 with assistance from the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office 8 (DA-RFO 8).

Climate change ready training held

The changing climatic condition of the world has threatened agricultural production, altering production cycles and incedence of pests and diseases, affecting suitability of land and water for food production among others.

Agriculture needs to be resilient against climate change. Filipinos consume rice as staple food and rice is commonly grown using monocropping techniques, which is particularly vulnerable to climate change-induced biological hazards.

AEWs refreshed on upland rice farming

In a call to increase rice production through the strong participation of the marginal upland rice farmers, the ATI-RTC VIII implemented the training on upland rice production on September 26-30, 2011.  Twenty-four agricultural extension workers (AEWs) from Samar island participated in the short course.

With the enablement of the upland rice farmers and provision of the right technology, it is hoped that the conservative production capacity of 30 to 40 cavans per hectare would increase to 80 to 90.

ATI 8 conducts TOT on upland rice production

The ATI-RTC 8 conducted the trainers training on upland rice production on April 11-15. Twenty-seven agricultural extension workers from the municipalities of Paranas, San Jose de Buan, Matuguinao, Gandara, Catbalogan, Motiong, San Jorge, Pinabacdao and Calbiga in the province of Western Samar and Lope de Vega of Northern Samar attended the training.

Submergence-Tolerant Rice Production training conducted

The decreasing rice lands and increasing number of mouths to feed led to producing rice even in most unlikely areas, like those that are prone to flooding.

With climate change, flooding can be more frequent.  Rather than leave flood-prone areas unproductive, efforts were made to utilize these areas to increase production of the country's basic staple.

With the soaring Philippine population comes the tall order to have more for the table without resorting to importation.

The country has posted already a 3.8 MT yield per hectare which is still low compared to what our neighboring countries have attained.  Our limited rice land area, an average of 1.14 hectare could no longer be expanded but is diminishing due to land conversion.

Embracing Farming

Fifty-year old Jessie Gunda Globio is the pride of Poblacion 2 in Balangkayan, Eastern Samar who takes farming as his bread and butter.  He went into farming because he saw the great potential of the land entrusted to him by his parents and in-laws.  These agricultural lands became his "classrooms" where he often  stays from sunrise to dusk.  They were witnesses of his passion to learn by doing and in striving for more.

Rising from Rice

Hitting 1st the rice production mark of 200 cavans per hectare is something when it is in the island of Samar.

Samar province is included in the club 20, a listing of the poor provinces in the country.  The reasons are many.  One of which is low production.  But Mr. Alipio P. Sabusap, Jr. who is from Sta.Rita, Samar showed to his people that they can graduate from the club.
