ATI 8 conducts IRPEP assessment

VSU, Baybay City.  The VSU-based ATI-RTC 8 conducted the Irrigated Rice Production Enhancement Program (IRPEP) Farmers Field School (FFS) Assessment and Planning Workshop on November 6-8, 2012.  The activity was participated in by 28 FFS facilitators from the provinces of Leyte, Samar and Northern Samar.

Project Officer Dalmacio Pajanustan provided the overall status of the IRPEP FFS implementation in the region focusing on the accomplishments and challenges.  The participants also shared their individual reports in the conduct of the FFS in their municipalities.

More FITS centers launched

Three more FITS centers were launched in the province of Leyte in June, increasing the number to 77.

On June 19, the Carigara FITS center was launched.  This was followed by Mahaplag on June 20 and by Matalom on June 26.  The three FITS centers are housed at the Office of the Municipal Agriculture, which is forefront in the delivery of information and technology services on agriculture, fishery, forestry and natural resources.

1st FITS center, 74th in Region 8 launched

On June 14, La Paz FITS center was launched.  It is the first center launched since the program was institutionalized at ATI.  It is the 30th in the province of Leyte and the 74th in the region.  The launching was graced by ATI-RTC 8 Center Director Paulino T. Cabahit, DA-RFU 8 Regional Executive Director Antonio G. Gerundio, Leyte Provincial Agriculturist Rogelio O. Portula and La Paz Vice Mayor Joel C. Cinco.

ATI 8 conducts TOT on cacao production

Baybay City -- The VSU-based ATI-RTC 8 conducted the training of trainers on cacao production on May 19-23, 2012. The training was done in collaboration with the local government of Matag-ob, Leyte which is one of cacao-producing municipalities in the province.

ATI 8 assists coffee farms rehabilitation

With the domestic demand for coffee growing and its economic potential, some local government units in Leyte and Southern Leyte initiated a rehabilitation program of their coffee farms.

To help in the rehabilitation program, the Agricultural Training Institute 8 convened together farmers, agricultural extension workers, DAR and DENR staff for an intensive 3-day training of trainers on coffee production.

Mango growers attend TOT on mango production

Baybay City -- The Agricultural Training Institute 8 based at the Visayas State University spearheaded the three days training of trainers on mango production technology attended by twenty-four mango growers, agricultural extension workers and state university staff.
  

ATI 8 holds ICS training

Go organic and label it.

Certification and labelling have been as important tools used in marketing organic products. Extensive capacity building and technical assistance to farmers, small and medium enterprises and even to certification bodies on the standards and requirements of organic agriculture and its trade requires much emphasis. Recognizing this, the ATI- RTC 8, conducted a 5-day training on the installation of Internal Control Systems (ICS) for smallholder groups (phase 1 and 2).

FSTP phase 2 ends, phase 3 begins

True to the cliché, graduation is not the end but rather the beginning, the Farmer-Scientists Training Program (FSTP) in corn-based production system for sustainable agricultural development held its graduation for phase 2 (On-Farm Experimentation and Technology Adoption) and at the same time launched the phase 3 of the program (Adopt-a-Barangay Technology Transfer).

30 finish FFS on jackfruit production

After five months of continuously attending the Farmer Field School (FFS) Season Long Training on Jackfruit Production, from September 2011 to February 2012, thirty residents of Javier, Leyte marched for their graduation exercises and field day. The graduates were 19 farmers, 10 local government unit personnel and a lone teacher.
 

ATI 8 training chief chairs best thesis panel

Dr. Henry Y. Goltiano, ATI 8 chief training officer, chaired the panel of judges in the social science category in the search for the 2012 most outstanding student thesis of the Visayas State University.  This year’s most outstanding student thesis in the social sciences was BS Development Communication graduate Niño Daryll Bicoy’s Effects of Tailored Multimedia Messages on Elementary School Children’s Intake of Sweet Potato.  Mr. Bicoy received the award during VSU’s graduation exercises on April 11, 2012.
