FIELDS InfoCaravan assessed

Towards the end of 2008, ATI 8 together with DA-RFU 8 and DA's attached agencies conducted three FIELDS information caravans in the provinces of Samar, Northern Samar and Leyte.  The activity was geared toward a more unified provision of agriculture services to farmers. 

AD Esquejo stressed extension role in FIELDS

The first FIELDS Information Caravan and Techno Clinic in Region VIII kicked-off at the Samar Provincial Gymnasium in Catbalogan City on October 22, 2008.  More than a thousand (1,045) participants mostly farmers from the province of Samar attended the event.

MOVE AFEN

To wind up 2008, 29 officers of the provincial agriculture and fishery extension networks (AFENs) in Eastern Visayas and staff of the DA-ATI 8 went to Cebu for the Mobile Venture for the Enhancement of Agriculture and Fishery Extension Networks or MOVE AFEN.

From December 3-5, 2008 they interacted with and learned from Kaabag sa Sugbo and its partners.  Kaabag is an outstanding network of 23 NGOs in Cebu, which has proven the strength and sustainabilityof its advocacies and development projects.

Springer-managed journal tapped Goltiano as reviewer

Dr Henry Y Goltiano, ATI 8 Training Specialist 4, was requested to serve as reviewer of the Smallscale Forestry, the scientific journal of the International Union of Frest Research Organizations (IUFRO).

The request was made through Dr Steve Harrison, Principal Research Fellow at the University of Queensland, Australia, who is the editor-in-chief of Smallscale.

AEWs trained on PalayCheck

One hundred thirty-six agricultural extension workers of the six provinces in Region Vlll were trained on PalayCheck in December 2008.

ITDs Show Increased Yield

The Integrated Technology Demonstrations (ITD) on hybrid rice technology showed remarkable performance of the hybrid rice in the municipalities of   Sta. Fe, Alang-alang, and Capoocan in Leyte province.  These municipalities conducted their field days on October 10, 16 and 17, respectively.

The ITDs in these municipalities had an average yield of 5.12 MT per hectare and an average of 82% computed return of investment.

HGT Taganas in International Short Course

MPS lll and ViCARP Regional Techno Gabay Coordinator (RTGC) HGT Taganas joined 18 other RTGCs and Consortium Directors in the international short course on educational technology management in Thailand on October 20-28, 2008.

The course on Continuing Education Program on Technology Management matched well with the need of the Techno Gabay implementers in enhancing their capabilities on technology management.  The course aimed to enable the Techno Gabay implementers to:

ATI 8 Spearheads FIELDS Info Caravan

Three (3) series of FIELDS Information Caravan and Techno Clinic were conducted in Eastern Visayas.  The first of the series was held at the Samar Provincial Gymnasium in Catbalogan City, Samar.  This was followed at the People's Center in Tacloban City and then at the University of Eastern Philippines’ gymnatorium in Catarman, Northern Samar on October 22, 24, and 28, respectively.  Close to 2,980 FIELDS stakeholders, mostly farmers attended the activities in this region.
 

Inbred Seed Growers Trained

Forty-eight inbred rice seed growers participated the training for seed quality control and certification on September 22-25, 2008 at ATI 8 center, Visayas State University, Baybay City.

The training was an enabling activity of the province of Leyte seed growers who are expected to provide the needed seed requirement of farmers not just for Leyte but for other provinces as well. 

Rice Coordinators Briefed on ITD

Twenty-five district, provincial and municipal coordinators for hybrid rice participated the orientation and technical briefing on integrated technology demonstration on hybrid rice-based farming system on July 29-30, 2008.
