Unveiling the Secret of Jaya Secret Garden

Last October 26-28, 2016, the Agricultural Training institute – Regional Training Center 10 in collaboration with the City Agriculture Office of Malaybalay conducted a training on Urban Vegetable Gardening in, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. The training was held at Jaya Secret Garden with more than thirty (30) participants residing in the city.
Included topics in the 3-day training were the container gardening, edible landscaping, concoction preparation delivered by Mr. Junah S. Bayag (Owner of Jaya Secret Garden), square foot gardening delivered by Mr. Honorio S. Cervantes (owner of Cervantes Square Foot Garden in Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City) and the concept of farming as a business delivered by Mr. Efren C. Macario, CPA (Administrative Officer IV of ATI 10).
Highlighted in the training was the return demonstration of the participants on making their own container garden. They brought home their outputs for them to start their container garden.
To fully understand container gardening, Mr. Junah S. Bayag tediously toured the participants to the garden and explained one by one the method he used in each site. Among the materials he used for his garden were worn-out tires, soft drink bottles and plastic containers, recycled bath tub and recycled metals, among others. “The concept of urban gardening is not how you make use of your useful space for gardening, it is how you make use of your useless space useful,” Mr. Bayag explained.
On the other hand, Mr. Cervantes awakened the interest of the participants in square foot gardening. He also demonstrated how to assemble a square foot garden and what vegetables to plant in it.
On the third day, Mr. Macario explained to the participants the business side in farming. He further added the topic in making the money work for the farmer thru investing. He introduced the stock market to the participants. All of them are interested to invest to it.
The participants were very satisfied to the topics and activities included in the training. Mr. Nathaniel Lagrimas thanked ATI for conducting the training in the garden and not in the hotel. “The training is very informative and I have learned a lot from it. The resource persons are very knowledgeable to their respective topics. The co-participants are friendly, cooperative and active. The training management staff are approachable and friendly. Food us very tasty. The venue is great because we can directly do hands-on activities on the garden. Furthermore, we can directly observe the actual situation of the garden,” he said.
For the whole duration of the training, the secret garden was slowly unveiled. Their secret was gradually exposed. It is their unwavering support to each other in every endeavor that they do. It is their unity and teamwork on maintaining the garden. It is their constitution to a farm family.
