Organic Rice Farmers Prepares for Third Party Certification

Mayor Diego C. Ty of Plaridel, Misamis Occidental shares his vision for organic agriculture to the participants of ICS training.

PLARIDEL, MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL – To recognize the farmers’ hard work in producing rice grown organically, a third party certification is a must to label their products “organic” legally and be able to participate in the local and global organic market.  Installation of Internal Control System (ICS) for smallholder groups is needed as the official control body to have a third party certification.
A total of thirty one (31) participants attended the Training on Organic Agriculture-Internal Control System (ICS) for Small Holder Groups.  Participants were composed of organic rice farmers from the city of Valencia and Malaybalay in Bukidnon, Higaonons indigenous people (IP) from Malitbog in Bukidnon, Oroquieta City and from the barangays of Mamanga Gamay, Katipunan, Cartagena Proper and New Look, all of Plaridel, Misamis Occidental.
The most important output after the 5 – day training is for the participants to produce their ICS manual. This document is needed to acquire a third party certification for organic rice produced by the IPs and farmers from the provinces of Bukidnon and Misamis Occidental.
Hon. Diego C. Ty, Municipal Mayor of Plaridel, Misamis Occidental which is a member of the League of Organic Agriculture Municipalities and Cities in the Philippines (LOAMC) graced the training and gave his message.
