MMSU conducts enhancement training for School-on-the-Air (SOA) graduates

The SOA graduates during their enhancement training

Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte - In response to the need for enhancement training on organic fertilizer production and utilization by the graduates of SOA in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, a training on organic fertilizer production was conducted on May 23, 2017 in Brgy. Sulbec, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte.

The training was conceptualized after one of the graduates, Mr. Crisner Lagazo, 4H Club President forwarded a letter to MMSU as regards their interest to enhance their skills on organic fertilizer production. “We’ve been producing our organic fertilizer before but was not sustained because our production area was destroyed by typhoon and at the same time, insufficient source of materials for production. Realizing the benefit of using organic fertilizer and as good source of income for the 4H club members including other members of the community, we need to enhance our skills again”, Lagazo said.

With the benefit they can get from the training, the SOA coordinator, Ms. Lorena Torda together with Mr. Lagazo and the interest of the other SOA graduates, they decided to include other graduates from other barangays like Brgy. Dilavo and Brgy. Salpad. Thirty participants attended the training and almost all of them were graduates of the SOA.

They said that the recently concluded SOA was very beneficial to them. When asked about the benefit of the SOA, Mr. Victoriano Benedicto Castillo Jr., President of the Narvaan Zanjera Association of Brgy. Dilavo, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte said that his garlic production was improved. “Dakkel ti naitulong ti SOA para kaniak ta nagbalin a daddadakkel dagiti binukel ti naapitko a bawang babaen iti panagaramatko iti organiko nga abono”, says Castillo. Ms. Magie Sagucio also said that the SOA helped them improved their garlic production since they were able to learn a lot from the SOA. Ms. Sagucio was very proud to show her notes during the SOA.

Dr. Floramante Pastor, Project In-charge of the Organic Fertilizar Production of MMSU and faculty of MMSU-College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development (CAFSD) served as speaker during the training. He discussed the importance of using organic fertilizer, solid and liquid organic fertilizer production including vermicomposting. Dr. Pastor volunteered to provide the trainees 1 kg each of African Night Crawler for the initial production of vermicompost.

The trainees express their need to have their own shredder for the production of organic fertilizer. MMSU and LGU Pasuquin expressed their support to link the trainees with other agencies for possible financial assistance.

The trainees agreed to established demonstration models for organic fertilizer production. Site validation was conducted after the training.
