FSTP on Corn Phase III Commences; Phase II Launches

Farmer receives his certificate of completion and manual corn sheller during graduation on FSTP

RIZAL, OCCIDENTAL MINDORO - A total of 22 farmer-scientists from the Municipality of Rizal graduated from Farmer-Scientist RDE Training Program (FSTP) in a Corn-based Production System for Sustainable Agricultural Development Phase III last February 9, 2017 at Brgy. Malawaan, Rizal, Occidental Mindoro.

These farmer-scientists had completed the three (3) phases of the program set by the FSTP partner-agencies. In Phase I which involved Value Formation, Research Exposure and Technical Empowerment, the farmer-participants were able to experiment plots of corn and compared the effects to one another while in the second phase which contained the on-farm experimentation and technology adoption, they replicated their research experiments from Phase I to their own farms. They set up experiments with the assistance of experts and agricultural technicians to determine which production technologies were appropriate and adoptable to their farms. And since they had already finished the Phases I and II, they are now called “farmer-scientists” in Phase III. In this phase, a Farmer-to-Farmer Technology Transfer and Adoption was practiced. The farmer-scientists shared their expertise by teaching untrained fellow corn farmers how to generate and develop farming technologies based on their experiences in Phase I and Phase II.

“Para sa akin, ang FSTP ay hindi Farmer-Scientists Training Program kundi Farmer-Scientists “Tyaga” Program dahil kung hindi ka magtatyaga na makilahok mula Phase I hanggang Phase III ay hindi ka talaga makakatapos. At ito ay malaking tulong para sa aming mga magmamais,” Mr. Rogelio Fallorina expressed during graduation.

Meanwhile, FSTP Phase II Brgy. Level was also launched concurrent to the graduation. Twelve (12) farmers completed the Phase I and will proceed to the Phase II of the program.

Aside from the certificates, the participants of both Phase I and Phase III received a manual corn sheller given by UP Los Banos, Agriculture Cluster.

The Municipality of Rizal is the third in the MiMaRoPa Region which successfully completed the three phases of the program.
