Responding to the Calls of Time: HVCDP Personnel Geared with Computer Based Data Management Skills

LA TRINIDAD, BENGUET. “Masapul nga talaga ti database management because of the voluminous reports required by the central office. (Database management is indeed necessary because of the voluminous reports required by the central office.)” This was what Ms. Benita Belgira of the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office-Cordillera Administrative Region (DA-RFO-CAR) High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) realized during the first batch of the training on computer based data management program for the HVCDP personnel of CAR.
The training was implemented by the Agricultural Training Institute-CAR (ATI-CAR) as a part of its continuous capability enhancement interventions for the agricultural extension workers (AEW) of the region. The activity was identified by the HVCDP agricultural extension workers at the local government units (LGU) and at the DA-RFO-CAR as one of their priority trainings during the consultation activities previously conducted by the ATI-CAR and the DA-RFO-CAR. The training aims to further capacitate the participants to efficiently sustain their reporting and filing system under the HVCDP and better respond to the requirements of their clients.

The training was attended by 34 participants composed of the provincial HVCDP focal persons from the provinces of Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and personnel from the Benguet Agri –Pinoy Trading Center (BAPTC) and the DA-RFO-CAR. They were taught on the basics of database management using MS Word and MS Excel. Aside from lectures the participants were given series of exercises from performing basic to complicated computer commands including multiple computations, classification and filing. They were also given a lecture on how to prepare and deliver presentations from the database they created.

Some of the participants shared their thoughts on the activity during the closing program. Ms. Lucia Guiang from the province of Kalinga said, “diyay control+S amuk diyayen shortcut ti panagsave ken jay control +M, adu dagijay ket I’m sure nga dagijay ti balunek madamdma nga agawid ijay Tabuk (l was able to learn a lot such as the commands control+S for save and control+M and I’m sure I will be bringing these home to Tabuk.)” Mr. Benjie Lunag, HVCDP focal person of the Provincial Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Office (PAENRO) of Ifugao, was optimistic that they will do better after the training. He said, “I hope nga nu next time nga umay tayo ditoy ket mayaten ti presentation tayo (I hope that when we come back here we have improved our presentations.)” The training was conducted at the ATI-CAR, BSU compound, La Trinidad, Benguet on February 28 to March 2, 2017.
