When one hears the word Dahilayan, it is always associated with the longest zipline in the country (although the record may not be true anymore as more ziplines are being launched). It brought this small barangay in Manolo Fortich in Bukidnon to the forefront of the consciousness of thrill seekers from even as far as Luzon. Add to the adventures offered is the cool climate and majestic vista. What makes it super attractive is its proximity to Cagayan de Oro City with less than an hour ride. On the way, the Del Monte Pineapple Plantation is another sight to behold especially to city...

Having been to various organic farms in the country and listening to first-hand stories of organic agriculture (OA) practitioners, I have opted to shift to a “healthier” living for more than a year now.  I tried juicing vegetables, incorporating fresh salads in every meal, and eating more vegetables than meat or rice.  But the integral part of this diet is that these greens that I consume must be ORGANIC (as much as possible).  Although there is enough supply of organic produce in supermarkets, I honestly think they are overpriced… so I looked for other...

Inspired by an extension activity designed to curb obesity implemented by the Cornell University Cooperative Extension (CUCE) in New York City, ATI-RTC 8 implemented a similar activity under its Organic Agriculture (OA) program to educate mothers on the value of money with the food they prepared. The activity, which took place in Calag-itan, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte on March 23, 2015 was dubbed "Value for Money: Shopping for Health". The activity was implemented by ATI-RTC 8 through its Extension Service Provider, the SPIADFI (South Pacific Integrated Area Development Foundation, Inc). It...

Upland barangays of Ormoc City is no stranger to calamities. They experienced loss of livelihood when their abaca plants where eradicated due to “bugtok”. Then came financial losses due to typhoons, foremost of which, was Yolanda. The losses were not only to production but also to soil fertility, which contributed to the low market value of products. The problem was responded by the Claretian Missionaries who provided training on organic farming technology and established clusters of organic communal gardens as learning sites for farmers in barangays Milagro, Dolores, Cabaon-an,...

Am I that crazy enough to receive award? When Dr. Vilma M. Patindol, our OIC Center Director in ATI Region 8 encouraged us to innovate during our planning last December 2014, my imagination went into overdrive. The idea of protecting the brain and plants in Plants vs. Zombies is relative to what organic agriculture is aiming. The strategies in Farmville can also be the farmers’ strategies in making integrated diversified organic farming system (IDOFS) farm. I am excited to make it short! Fascinated to meet the farmers of Region 8 and eager to become part of the development of their...

Here’s the challenge, to promote organic products in an innovative yet effective way! The activity is very simple but it feels different. It’s because this is my first time to handle this kind of activity that is very unique from the typical activity we are doing in ATI. Though the objective is the same, to gather 50 mother-consumers, involve them in a half-day discussion-demonstration about food nutrition and safety at the same time appreciate organic products. The two-hour travel from the official station to Brgy. Calag-itan, Hinunangan Southern Leyte (venue) gave me enough...

Who's first? It's year ending and it's reckoning time. With KM we always recognized the innovativeness and creativeness of each RTC in enhancing access to AFE knowledge products and services. The recognition was no flare, just text sent to all congratulating those in the lead for the most news, first to upload or for a new block. Sometimes it's just like "I appreciate the blog of __ or the innovations of __" and everyone is high because we are a class. Remember: "class is already up and need not strive to look better by making others look worse". The reports showed that we...

My second blog for the year… and I am so much thankful for 2014, it’s been one of the greatest. I had so many experiences to linger, from home to work and to life in general. My first blog talks about my experiences that provided me and my family another life to celebrate despite the all not-so-good turnout of events. Thus, clinging the past recounting all the mess will just lead us into woe. Then why not reckon the joys in order for us to evoke the sweetness of our success. Geez! Why not? In the first semester of 2014, the suffix Ph.D. was officially conferred to me by the...

Everytime I visit Costales Nature Farms (CNF) in Majayjay, Laguna, I continue to be amazed with how the farm continue to grow and be an inspiration to others. In the many instances that I visited the farm, busloads of visitors are already there before us. The last time I was there, I was told that the visitors from the two buses parked outside the farm are from the Department of Tourism.   I was prepared for a less impressive farm because I knew that Glenda wrecked havoc to it mid of this year. I heard that the 28 greenhouses, which is the heart of the farm operation were all destroyed...

Entice. Mr Webster defines it as to draw on artfully. Its synonyms are lure, charm, attract and persuade. To do it, one must have a unique selling point. This is what many of our Magsasaka Siyentista (MS) do. They innovate to attract and influence. Listening to our MSs who passionately shared what they did and are doing makes my work more fulfilling. Theirs were stories of greatness, of "plea to praise", of "hurt to heart" and of the common "rags to riches". There were others who were then in the corporate world, now in the farm. They said, "from corporate...
