ATI and PhilRice discuss future program collaborations for capacitating rice farmers.

QUEZON CITY – The Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) have geared up for further program collaborations to strengthen knowledge and capacity building in rice farming and also empower smallholder rice farmers.

In a recent dialogue between ATI OIC-Director Luz Taposok and PhilRice Acting Deputy Executive Director for Development Karen Eloisa Barroga, plans on partnership for building content on knowledge products, and tapping rice-based model farms to be part of ladderized approach in extension service were discussed.

Dr. Taposok explained the certification of Learning Site in Agriculture (LSAs) that can serve as practical demonstration areas for rice farming skills development.

PhilRice is likewise looking at forging ties on ATI’s farm business schools to help rice farmers be more profit-driven. They presented their initiative on the development of rice and rice-based enterprise models thru the program called “Rice Business Innovations Systems (Rice BIS) which was designed to help farmers become agripreneurs.

Moreover, Dr. Barroga expressed their intention to craft policies for the next phase of the Agricultural Development Officers of the Community (AgriDOC), a project implemented by the International Rice Research Institute, PhilRice and ATI.

“Let us further fine-tune skills in rice science thru AgriDOCs”, Dr. Barroga remarked.

Dr. Taposok assured that ATI will actively cooperate in different convergence programs and initiatives in extension and development particularly in providing socioecomic opportunities for the farmers and fishers.

“It is important for us to collaborate and be updated of each other’s operations to fully equip our farmers and fishers with the necessary means for development,” Dr. Taposok added.

Other ATI officials also present during the discussion were Ms. Antonieta Arceo of the Information Services Division and Engr. Renato Dela Cruz of Partnerships and Accreditation Division.

The said meeting was held last January 25, 2018 in the ATI Central Office.
