LA TRINIDAD, BENGUET. The municipalities of Villaviciosa, Bucay and San Juan in Abra gathered 131 rice farmers for an interview during the mass deployment of the Rice Crop Manger (RCM) in Abra on November 26 and 27, 2018. The RCM deployment is one of the newest services of the Municipal Local Government Units of Villaviciosa, Bucay and San Juan under their respective agricultural offices. Moreover, these municipalities are also adopters of the Techno Gabay Program and are maintaining their respective Farmers Information and Technology Services Center which were established or enhanced through the RCM. Thus, one of their tasks is to sustain the RCM at in the municipal level.
The RCM aims to reduce production costs, increase yields, increase net income, and facilitate a professional extension service deploying appropriate information at correct times to farmers through information and communications technology (ICT). RCM provides farmers with a personalized crop management recommendation that will help them in the management of their farm.
The recommendation is based on the farmers’ answers on a series of questions being asked by the RCM. RCM uses the historical rice production information from farmers and fields to improve the recommendations for the farmers and fields. The recommendation provides the recommended fertilizer, amount, and timing of fertilizer application in the field.
During the deployment the farmers were first given an orientation regarding the RCM. Individual interview with the farmers followed. They were also given a printed copy of the recommendation. Before receiving the recommendation, the farmers were first introduced to the recommendation, how it is interpreted and what are the essential information in it. The farmers acknowledged during the activity that knowing the right amount of fertilizer and time of application in their rice field is a great help in managing their farm. (By Resley Ann G. Sumedca)
