ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR- In line with the Department of Agriculture’s Corn Program which aim to increase production of quality corn for human consumption, feeds and industrial uses, as well as empower the farmers to increase their income, thereby improving their quality of life, the Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center IX (ATI-RTC IX) conducted three (3) batches of Training on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for Corn.

GAP for Corn is a set of consolidated safety and quality standards formulated by the Department of Agriculture (DA) for the production, harvesting and on-farm post-harvest handling and storage of corn.

During the three-day training, lecture and participative discussion, sharing of experiences, and open forum were employed. The topics included were the Status of Corn Industry in the Philippines, Rationale for GAP, Farm location, Farm environment, Farm structure and facility maintenance, Farming practices, Worker’s health and safety, Farm management, GAP certification guidelines, and Prevention and control of aflatoxin.

Ms. Marivic Lingcay, of Brgy. Rizal, Sominot, Zamboanga del Sur, one of the participants on GAP batch 1 rendered her impression. She said, “We are very much thankful to ATI for the 3-day training on GAP Corn. With this, we learned the prevention and control of aflatoxin and also, the right timing of fertilizer application”. Through this training, the participants became aware and they have appreciated the importance of GAP. Especially, the production of safe and quality corn, as well as its benefits to the worker’s health and sustainability of the environment. They were also expected to adapt or practice the technology in their areas and encouraged to submit application for GAP certification.

A total of 92 participants successfully completed the three (3) batches of GAP training held at Barangay Rizal, Sominot; Poblacion, Vincenzo Sagun; and Poblacion, Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur last June 3-5, 2019; June 6-8, 2019; and July 1-3, 2019 respectively.

Moreover, training on GAP batch 4 will be conducted at Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte this coming July 22-24, 2019.
