Tunga, Leyte – Mention the word bees and people conjure images of sweet honey and stings. What most people don’t know is that there are species of bees that are stingless and they make really good honey!
The Agricultural Training Institute Regional Training Center 8 (ATI RTC 8) conducted the Buzz in Beekeeping (Climate Livestock Farming System) training at the BEEngo Farm in Tunga, Leyte. Participants were taught how to raise and multiply stingless bees for honey production. During the training, Resource Person Mr. Gary Ayuste, owner of BEEngo Farm, discussed native honey production, pollination biology, the different species of bees as well as the lifecycle of the stingless bee. Mr. Ayuste also introduced the participants to the different products from the hive, the benefits of beekeeping, and the different bee-friendly plants in the country.
Ely Rowen Salar of Dulag, Leyte said, “This beekeeping training thought me so many things in life. First, the importance of bees in our lives. Another thing is how to love and preserve our nature. I started engaging in farming a few months ago and bees will be a big help to my plants aside from the benefits we get from the bee products. Thank you very much for the opportunity sir Gary and ATI”.
Ariza Jona Ramirez of Naval, Biliran felt grateful as she enthused, “Thank you ATI-RTC 8 for giving me the opportunity to attend this beekeeping training. What I only know about bees is they pollinate plants and produce honey but through this 3-day training, I understood more about bees: the health benefits of bee products and the importance of bees to our farm plants, how if you have bees in your farm your fruit trees will bear fruits whole year-round, and how beneficial bees are to our environment. Thank you Sir Gary for being a good speaker. You deliver the topics and workshops interestingly and understandable for us farmers.
Each participant was given a feral colony and beehive as a starter kit. The participants accepted the challenge to be one of the beekeepers in the region and promised to share their success during the next ATI training on beekeeping. The speaker, Mr. Gary Ayuste also requested ATI RTC 8 for the conduct of a TOT on Beekeeping to easily spread the beekeeping technology in the region.
The 3-day training was attended by 25 farmers and interested individuals on October 29- 31, 2019 at the BEEngo Farm, Tunga, Leyte.
