“Buy Local. Eat Local. Support our Rice Farmers,” this is the battle cry of the 2019 National Rice Awareness Month (NRAM) being celebrated this month of November.
The ATI-RTC 02 and PhilRice Isabela together with the rice farmers of San Mateo Isabela conducted a Be RICEponsible campaign on November 8, 2019, to open the month-long celebration.
The 2019 NRAM celebration aims to encourage consumers to patronize locally produced to help our Filipino farmers to reduce the impact of the increase of available imported rice in the market.
A caravan was conducted along the stretch of San Mateo-Cabatuan road to raise awareness among consumers. Simultaneous fun activities were prepared for the participants.
The cooking-contest featuring brown rice as the main ingredient highlighted the Be RICEponsible campaign.
Aside from promoting locally produced rice and brown rice, the NRAM celebration also encourages consumers to not waste rice.
In a study of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute in 2008, every Filipino wasted an average of 2 tablespoons of cooked rice or 9 grams of uncooked rice daily. The wastage can feed 2.5 million Filipinos for a year.
November is being observed as National Rice Awareness Month by virtue of Proclamation No. 524 signed on Jan. 5, 2004.
