SAN MATEO, Isabela. The municipality of San Mateo is always celebrating its annual balatong festival every month of May. But this year, it is a two-in-one Fiesta. The Cagayan Valley Agricultural and Aquatic Resources Research and Development (CVAARRD) Consortium partnered with the Local Government Unit of San Mateo in the celebration of the Balatong Festival and the Farm-Industry Encounters through the Science and Technology Agenda (FIESTA).
The ATI-RTC 02 together with the other CVAARRD member-agencies joined the week-long celebration by participating in the exhibit dubbed as balatong village, as well as in float parade dressed according to the theme and the balatong field day.
Meanwhile, the Center sponsored an investment forum participated by the balatong farmers and other stakeholders from different municipalities. Panels came from the Kapatid Agri-Mentor Me Program (KAMMP), KROPS, Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 02 (DA-RFO). They offered their programs and services that can help balatong farmers sell their products and do value-adding of their balatong. Stakeholders have the opportunity to ask the panels regarding market price, financial assistance, and packaging and value-adding support to balatong industry.
Balatong is a local term for mungo, which is considered the blackgold of the municipality of San Mateo.
San Mateo is the mungo capital of the Philippines as per Administrative Order No. 23, series of 2011.
