ATI Promotes White Corn as Staple Food

STA. MARIA, Isabela. Farmers from Sta. Maria, Isabela and Enrile, Cagayan were encouraged to plant white corn for food since these two municipalities are basically corn producers. A briefing on white corn production was conducted in Enrile, Cagayan and Sta. Maria, Isabela on February 19 and February 21, 2019, respectively.

During the briefing, Ms. Rosalinda B. Lucero, Corn Program Focal Person of ATI-RTC 02 discussed the updates on climate change resiliency and adaptation on corn production as well as financial literacy and its significance. She presented technologies and good practices on corn farming that are adaptable to climate change. Diversified farming system is encouraged for the farmers to have alternative source of income in the advent of natural calamities.

Meanwhile, Mr. Severino C. Tumamang, Agricultural Center Chief II of DA Cagayan Valley Research Center presented the overview of corn industry in region 02 and the Philippines. He also discussed the benefits of growing white corn and eating rice-corn blend. Aside from addressing food sufficiency, it is also good for the health since corn has less sugar. He encouraged farmers to plant white corn. There is also an assured market for this crop.

The two briefings were attended by 115 farmers from Enrile, Cagayan and Sta. Maria, Isabela.
