SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte – The province of Agusan del Norte (AgNor) was hailed as over-all champion during the Regional Farm Youth (4-H) Camp spearheaded by Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center (ATI-RTC) XIII held last April 17-19, 2018 at Mt. Bagarabon, Mabua, Surigao City with the theme “LOVE. FARM. LIVE 4-H Towards Farm Tourism.” AgNor has dominated the event for three consecutive years since 2015.

AgNor was followed by Butuan City (1st Runner-Up), Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur (2nd Runner-Up), Agusan del Sur (3rd Runner-Up), Province of Dinagat Islands (4th Runner-Up), and Bislig City (5th Runner-Up).

There were 100 4-H Club members and coordinators from the five provinces and two cities (Butuan and Bislig) of Caraga Region who attended the activity. The event was highlighted by eight competitions.

In his message, Isaias Ilumba (City Agriculturist of Surigao City) reminded the youth on the famous Jose Rizal quote saying “The youth is the hope of our country.” He expressed his trust to the young generation in attaining the goal of food security through appreciation and farm engagement because the youth nowadays do not recognize the high importance of agriculture.

Moreover, Ryan C. Bucabal, from Agricultural Program Coordinating Officer (APCO) – Surigao del Norte, added that the youth can greatly help promote farm tourism and agriculture as a whole by using different channels especially the social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) that can reach people in and outside Philippines. This could encourage others to visit farms and tourist destinations in Caraga.

Other personalities who gave their messages were Hide S. Villaba, Assistant City Agriculturist, and Samuel L. Calonzo, OIC Center Director of ATI-RTC XIII who also gave a lecture about Agri-Tourism.

Jeffrey Tuazon, 4-H Club member from Butuan City, when asked to give his impression said that the camp was engaging and educational. The different contests tested the skills and abilities of the youth, giving focus on the innovations and creativity while putting farm tourism at the core of each activity.

The activity also includes farm visit to JB Nature Farm, an ATI-RTC XIII Learning Site located at Barangay Sukailang, Surigao City and owned by Engr. Woodrow Escobal Jr.

All first place winners in every category will compete at the National Farm Youth Camp to be held on May 22-24, 2018 at Punta Resort, Iloilo City.
