Mr. Samuel L. Calonzo was designated as the Officer-in-Charge of the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center XIII (ATI-Caraga) effective January 1, 2018 by virtue of Special Order No. 1250, series of 2017, signed by DA Secretary Emmanuel P. Piñol.
He took on the position as Training Center Superintendent I for three years from 2015 and up to the present. Prior to this, he was a Training Specialist III for 11 years (2004-2015) and an Agriculturist II for 14 years (1990-2004). He is considered both a pillar and a pioneer in ATI-Caraga having been in the Center for 28 years and since its creation as a Farmers’ Training Center in 1990.
Even before his stint in ATI, he was already involved in agriculture-related works in various government offices – a career path he has tread for 37 years. His first employment was at the City Agriculture Office (Butuan City) as a Farm Management Technician (FMT) then at the Bureau of Forest Development (BFD) as an Agriculturist in 1981. He then moved to the Municipal Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) office in Magallanes, Agusan del Norte as a permanent employee for five years. His humble beginnings at MAF started as a Livestock Inspector (1984-1985), then as an Agriculture Production Technician (1985-1989) before his position was renamed as Agricultural Technologist (AT) in July of 1989.
His expertise in his field is also marked by the numerous trainings and seminars he attended within the country and abroad. Among these were the Training on Agricultural Teachers Course on Pig Husbandry at ITCPH (416 hours), Training on Organic Agriculture Production at Aces Polytechnic College in Panabo City (232 hours), Training on Extension Methods for Production Technology in Quezon City (190 hours) and Training on Project Development at NEDA X in Cagayan de Oro City (160 hours). He is also a registered agriculturist and an NC II holder on Organic Agriculture Production. In April 2016 he flew to Oklahoma, USA to attend the Training on Goat Production and Management at Langston University.
Mr. Calonzo finished his elementary education at Panabo Central Elementary School, Panabo City, Davao del Norte in 1969. He spent his high school years at Agusan National High School (ANHS) in Butuan City where he graduated in 1973. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Agriculture major in Animal Husbandry at the Mindanao State University (Marawi City) in 1980 and his Master in Management at the Saint Joseph Institute of Technology (Butuan City) in 1998.
Being born in the year of the Monkey (1957) and in the month of the Capricorn (January), Mr. Calonzo is both determined and active. He is a key influencer and is more keen on learning through practice. He is married to Doris Pabroquez Calonzo and has two children namely Darah Mae and Sam Christopher.
