GENERAL SANTOS CITY, South Cotabato — A total of 100 frontliners in agricultural extension attended the Technical Conference on Agricultural Mechanization and Postharvest Technologies last March 6-10, 2017.  They are composed of Agriculture and Fishery Mechanization (AFMech) focal persons of the Agricultural Training Institute’s network of training centers, Regional Information Officers from Department of Agriculture’s regional field offices, and staff from Provincial Agricultural Offices in Visayas and Mindanao.

The Master in Public Management major in Rural Development (MPM-RD) is an 18-month scholarship program that seeks to foster the rural development initiatives in the Philippines. The program scholars are permanent employees from three major rural development-oriented government agencies namely: Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and Department of Agriculture (DA). Nowadays, young people prefer courses that will give them greater and faster economic opportunities after college than taking up agriculture. In this line, the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), together with the Department of Education’s Bureau of Secondary Schools and the CGIAR’s Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security research program, initiated the “Infomediary Campaign in the Philippines” with the primary aim of engaging more youth in agriculture.

Finding means to feed the fast growing population in Southeast Asia is one of the challenges that the region faces. Moreso, there is a great need for the aquaculture sector to produce more food fish that could feed these nations.
